Peru President: Mandatory social immobilization to start earlier

12:59 | Lima, Mar. 30.

President Martin Vizcarra on Monday afternoon announced that the Council of Ministers has approved a Supreme Decree for the compulsory social immobilization (curfew) to begin earlier —from 06:00 p.m. to 05:00 a.m. as of Tuesday. The measure aims to prevent the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) in Peru.

On the other hand, the social immobilization will start at 4:00 p.m. in five regions of the country such as Lambayeque, La Libertad, Loreto, Piura, and Tumbes.

Last week, the governors of the aforementioned regions agreed to take extreme measures to ensure that the population complies with compulsory social immobilization.

For instance, Manuel Llempen, Governor of La Libertad —one of the regions with the highest number of detainees— proposed imposing "more severe measures."

Remarks were made in a virtual press conference, within the framework of a mandatory social isolation imposed to prevent the COVID-19 from further spreading in the South American country.

On this occasion, the President was joined by members of the Council of Ministers. The event was held at the Government Palace in Lima.

Monday marks the fifteenth day of mandatory social isolation.
