The solemn event took place at Flag Roundabout in Lima's Pueblo Libre district.

On the occasion, he was joined by Defense Minister Jorge Moscoso; Head of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces, Army General Cesar Astudillo; and commanders general of each of the three armed forces.

At the ceremony, the Head of State granted the Democracy Defender Award to the brave Chavin de Huantar commandos who rescued MRTA hostages at the Japanese ambassador's residence in Lima back on April 22, 1997.
