Peru President leads Armed Forces Day ceremony

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Monday led the ceremony marking the Armed Forces Day.

The solemn event took place at Flag Roundabout in Lima's Pueblo Libre district.

On the occasion, he was joined by Defense Minister Jorge Moscoso; Head of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces, Army General Cesar Astudillo; and commanders general of each of the three armed forces.

At the ceremony, the Head of State granted the Democracy Defender Award to the brave Chavin de Huantar commandos who rescued MRTA hostages at the Japanese ambassador's residence in Lima back on April 22, 1997.

The Armed Forces Day is celebrated on September 24, the feast of the Virgin of Mercy, patroness of the Armed Forces.

In Peru, the Armed Forces are composed of the Army, the Navy, and the Air Force.
