appeared before the Congress Oversight Commission, which is holding an extraordinary session, to provide the relevant statements and clarifications regarding a visit he made to establishments owned by a Chinese citizen.
The Head of State appeared before this working group on his own initiative, according to a communication sent to its chairman, Elvis Vergara, in which he expressed his willingness to appear before the commission.
In that communication, the top official also reaffirmed his commitment to the "principles of transparency, institutional cooperation, and respect for the constitutional order."
At the start of this session, Congressman Vergara stated that the extraordinary session would address only the unrecorded meetings with the businessman.
The legislator clarified that the extraordinary session is part of a series of proceedings to be conducted on the matter, which will include requests for information from those involved.
"Should indications be found, investigative commission powers will be requested to determine political and criminal responsibility," Vergara said, after briefly adjourning the session to allow the president to enter the room.
The Oversight Commission’s session is being held in Congress' Miguel Grau Seminario Hall.
According to the working group’s agenda, the President delivered statements regarding recent media reports directly involving him.
In remarks to America Television last Tuesday, President Jeri mentioned there is a clear intent to destabilize the Presidency of the Republic through the attacks he has been facing following a meeting with a Chinese businessman, stressing that no illegal acts took place during that encounter.
"I did not lie to the country. There is an attempt to distort ordinary acts, such as going to a chifa (Chinese-Peruvian restaurant) or a shop, into criminal conduct, which I categorically deny. It has become clear to me, based on the video I have reviewed, that there is a destabilizing intent and that there is indeed a plot, which must be uncovered," he said.
