Peru: Government urges companies to use substitute fuels instead of natural gas

13:39 | Lima, Mar. 4.

The Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem) led a coordination meeting of the Management Committee to monitor the energy crisis, with the participation of public entities and companies linked to the natural gas value chain.

The aim was to coordinate actions to address the emergency temporarily affecting the transport of this resource and to ensure the continuity of energy supply in the country.

During the session, Energy and Mines Minister Angelo Alfaro highlighted that the government is working in coordination with all sector stakeholders to restore natural gas transport operations as soon as possible.

He said the aim is to ensure energy supply for millions of Peruvians in households, businesses, public transport, hospitals, and essential services.

As part of the measures adopted to address this exceptional situation, the Committee agreed to evaluate and facilitate the temporary use of substitute fuels, such as diesel or LPG.

This would apply in cases where certain industries need to maintain the continuity of their production operations while natural gas supply is restored.

Within this framework, Minem urged industrial agents with the technical capacity to use substitute fuels to evaluate the exceptional application of Supreme Decree No. 063-2010-EM.

The regulation authorizes the Supervisory Agency for Investment in Energy and Mining (Osinergmin) to establish temporary measures that allow certain provisions of hydrocarbon marketing and safety regulations to be exceptionally exempted when situations arise that affect domestic supply or the continuity of essential services.

The application of these measures must be exceptional and temporary, as well as subject to the corresponding technical evaluation.

At all times, compliance with operational safety conditions, supervision, and risk control must be ensured, in accordance with the responsibilities of Osinergmin and the sector authorities.

These provisions will be strictly exceptional and temporary and will apply only while normal operating conditions of the natural gas transport system are restored.

Minem reiterated that it will continue informing citizens about advances in addressing this emergency and the actions being implemented to ensure energy supply and the system’s stability.
