Peru President: Illegitimate, dictatorial regime has been established in Venezuela

President Martin Vizcarra affirmed an illegitimate and dictatorial regime has been imposed on Venezuela, referring to Nicolas Maduro's administration, who was sworn into a new term in office on Thursday.

"We raise our voices in protest to defend democracy in Latin America," the Head of State said via Twitter last night.

On January 4, the Lima Group announced it would not recognize the legitimacy of Maduro's new government.

Likewise, the Organization of American States (OAS) adopted the same stance.

Thus, Peru has banned the entry of Maduro and 99 members of his regime —including their relatives— to its territory.

Furthermore, the Foreign Affairs Ministry announced that Peru has recalled its Charge d'Affaires to Venezuela, First Secretary Rosa Alvarez Nuñez.

It should be noted the Peruvian Embassy in Caracas will remain open but with reduced diplomatic functions.

However, Foreign Affairs Minister Nestor Popolizio recognized that cutting diplomatic relations with a neighboring nation is always an option when faced to an illegitimate regime.
