Peru President holds meeting with six Congress political groups

President Martin Vizcarra on Monday held a meeting with the spokespeople of six Congress' political groups in order to address the early general elections proposal submitted by the Executive Branch to Parliament.

Peruanos por el Kambio (PPK), Nuevo Peru (NP), Frente Amplio (FA), Bancada Liberal (BL), Unidos por la Republica (UR), and Cambio 21 were the attending parties.

On the occasion, the Head of State was joined by Prime Minister Salvador del Solar and Justice-Human Rights Minister Vicente Zeballos.

According to the lawmakers, the agenda included the assessment of the abovementioned initiative due to the risk of hindering its debate at Parliament.

Last August, President Vizcarra affirmed the early general elections by 2020 are the only way out of the current political entrapment and urged lawmakers to listen to the people.

Days ago, Prime Minister Del Solar said before Congress' Constitution Commission that this constitutional reform is the best means to offer the country a way out of the political confrontation.

According to a recent Datum poll, 64% of Peruvians support the proposal of holding early elections by 2020. Also, 72% reject the possibility of a presidential impeachment.
