President Martin Vizcarra on Wednesday led the ceremony to honor the heroes on the front line in the battle against COVID-19, at the Army Headquarters in Lima.

Upon arrival, the Head of State participated in the symbolic act of lighting a flame in honor of those heroes. A minute of silence was observed on the occasion.

The act served to recognize and praise the institutions that have fought the battle against the new coronavirus, such as the Armed Forces, the Peruvian National Police and the General Volunteer Firefighters Department, among others.

As is known, the military parade will not take place this year because of the pandemic.

It also saw the participation of Prime Minister Pedro Cateriano, Defense Minister Walter Martos and Congress Chairman Manuel Merino, among other authorities.

The "Homage to the heroes of the battle against the COVID-19" was the last activity held on the occasion of Peru's 199th Independence Anniversary commemoration.
