Peru: President addresses the nation on Independence Day Anniversary (Photo Gallery)

President Martin Vizcarra on Tuesday addressed the nation on the occasion of the 199th Anniversary of Peru's Independence.

Prior to that, the Head of State took part —via videoconference— in the Solemn Mass and Te Deum.

The top official's message mentioned the measures implemented in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, the economic reactivation, and political reform, as well as the main announcements for the coming year exercising power.

The Presidential Independence Day Speech was —without any doubt— the most important activity on the occasion.

The event took place at Congress headquarters this morning.

As is known, Mr. Vizcarra took office on March 23, 2018, to replace resigning Pedro Pablo Kuczynski.

His term in office will come to an end in July 2021. The

successor will be chosen in the general elections scheduled for April 11, 2021.

Independence Day

Peru became independent from the Spanish rule on July 28, 1821.

Thus, this day serves to commemorate the nation's independence.

The independence process successfully came to an end with the Ayacucho Battle in December 1824.
