Peru President: Goal of adding 1,000 vehicles to police fleet met

10:53 | Lima, Dec. 18.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Wednesday affirmed that the Government has met its goal of providing more than 1,000 vehicles —aimed at combating citizen insecurity across the country— to the National Police (PNP).

During the delivery —held at the Interior Ministry esplanade— Mr. Vizcarra noted that citizen insecurity affects Lima and Callao.

Besides, he added, the sense of insecurity is felt from Tacna to Tumbes, and reaches regions in the highlands and rainforest. Hence the need to "work hard in order to combat crime."

"This year, we set the goal of adding 1,000 vehicles to the fleet. We delivered a batch in October, another in November, and now, in December —before the year ends— we are going to achieve the goal of delivering more than 1,000 units (…) to address citizen insecurity issues," he remarked.

According to the Peruvian leader, the batch of 575 units —handed over this morning— includes pick-up trucks, patrol cars, and tow trucks.

He explained the acquisition was conducted under the renting system to maintain a continuous operational capability.

"Then, the police will no longer be concerned about administrative procedures for their maintenance. Their only concern will be to address citizen insecurity. We will no longer have patrol car cemeteries in police stations, but operational vehicles patrolling the most insecure areas and providing security to the population," he expressed.
