Peru President expresses support for Interior Minister, National Police

10:55 | Lima, May. 7.

President Martin Vizcarra on Tuesday expressed his complete support for Interior Minister Carlos Moran, the National Police (PNP) high-command, and other members of the institution.

Likewise, the Head of State criticized the way Congress' Defense Committee mistreated them recently.

Last Monday, Interior Minister Carlos Moran, National Police Commander General Jose Luis Lavalle, and members of PNP's High Complexity Investigations Division (Diviac) appeared before Parliament's Defense Committee lawmakers, who had convened them to provide details concerning the enforcement of a preliminary detention order against deceased ex-President Alan Garcia and a raid in his residence on April 17. On that day, Garcia shot himself and died.

During the Congress meeting, some incidents occurred between opposition lawmakers and Diviac agents.

"I offer my total support for the Interior Minister, Police high-command, and Police members who have been mistreated yesterday in Parliament," the President said today.

According to the statesman, it is appalling how some citizens disrespect the PNP. He also stressed that everyone —including high-ranking officials— must respect the institution's members.

"We, our administration, will support the Police, even when they have to face legal proceedings for doing their job (…)," the top official expressed.

President Vizcarra —alongside Interior Minister Carlos Moran— inspected the construction works of PNP National Hospital Luis N. Saenz in Lima.

On the occasion, they were joined by National Police Commander General Lavalle and PNP Health Services Chairwoman Maria Hinostroza, as well as other officials.
