Peru President: Early general elections proposal must be assessed next week

14:08 | Huanuco (Huanuco region), Aug. 15.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Thursday affirmed he expects Congress will —next week— start debating the constitutional reform bill submitted by the Executive Branch aimed at calling for early general elections by 2020.

In this sense, the Head of State recalled the proposal is urgent. Thus, he hopes its assessment will be prioritized once Parliament Commissions are confirmed for the 2019-2020 session period.

Likewise, the top official reiterated the initiative will enable a democratic transition, noting Peruvian citizens will be allowed to elect more empowered authorities that will take office on July 28, 2020.

Furthermore, the statesman indicated he is sure Congress' political groups will support the bill, which is already backed by the population.

He went on to add the early elections proposal is democratic, and its only goal is to put an end to the permanent confrontation that has existed between the State branches for three years.

Parliament Constitution commission is a work group in charge of debating and approving the initiative to call for early general elections by 2020, before it is discussed at Congress' plenary session.

Remarks were made during the 480th Spanish Foundation Anniversary of Huanuco.
