Peru President: Credit unions must be supervised by banking regulator

17:31 | Lima, Jun. 12.

Credit unions must continue operations in Peru, but under supervision of the Superintendency of Banking, Insurance, and Private Pension Fund Administrators (SBS), Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra said on Tuesday.

The Head of State urged Congress to approve the bill —which would enable the SBS to oversee credit unions— before the end of the current legislature.

In an official communique, the statesman said that —by constitutional mandate— the SBS is the body responsible for this regulation, as well as for preventing and identifying potential money laundering cases.

"In this sense, it is important to respect SBS' constitutional autonomy," Peru's top official pointed out.

Vizcarra said the Parliament must provide clear signs of its contribution to fighting corruption. To that end, he called for the approval of such mechanism before the end of the current legislature.

"We need to take specific steps in all areas if we want to combat informality and money laundering," the President added.

Nobody shall skip supervision and control —he noted— and the millions of users who put their money in deserve to have security.

"All entities, economic agents, and citizens need to contribute responsibly for Peru to remain on the path of growth," he stated.

"This will enable us to build a serious, foreseeable country and ensure a prosper future with equal opportunities for current and future generations," he concluded.
