Peru President: Corruption affects the poorest, hence our struggle against it

14:31 | Lima, Oct. 1.

Peruvian President on Monday said his Government places emphasis on the fight against corruption affecting the poorest as its ultimate goal is to improve Peruvians' quality of life.

The Head of State underlined that the scourge of corruption affects the most disadvantaged across the Andean nation.

On the other hand, he stressed the fact that poverty is no longer expressed as someone else's problem and that Peru is deprived of around S/10 billion (US$3 billion) each year as a result of this crime.

After reiterating his Government's commitment to economic growth, Vizcarra said this will make no sense if human beings —those living in poverty— are not placed at the center.

Therefore, he confirmed his administration's ultimate objective of improving Peruvians' quality of life and reducing the poverty rate.

His remarks came as he attended the reinstatement of the Roundtable for the Fight against Poverty's (MCLCP) National Executive Committee.

The said commision comprises State organizations and civil society representatives.

Its goal is to promote national dialogue and coordinate efforts with a view to fighting poverty in the Inca country.

The ceremony was held at Lima-based Government Palace.
