President Martin Vizcarra congratulated and expressed his best wishes to recently-elected Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

"My congratulations to Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on his election as President of Mexico," the Peruvian leader posted on Twitter.

It must be noted over 80 million Mexicans headed to the polls last Sunday. First reports revealed the leftist was elected by a large majority over his other rivals.

Running as the head of his National Regeneration Movement (Morena), he received more than 50% of votes according to official estimates.

Thus, the 64-year-old former Mexico City mayor will become the first left-leaning President to lead this North American country in decades.

As is known, Mexico and Peru maintain a strategic bilateral relationship.

In addition, both nations —along with Chile and Colombia— comprise the Pacific Alliance (PA), the most dynamic trade integration bloc in the region.
