The President of the Republic Dina Boluarte on Tuesday congratulated Congress for having proposed bringing the second legislature forward to February 15. Thus, it will be possible to endorse the advancement of the general elections to 2024.

Remarks to the media were made at the end of the supervision of the mechanism for the discharge of medical appointments at the Social Health Insurance System (EsSalud).

"I congratulate the attitude of Congress; indeed, the population is waiting for the advancement of elections; the second voting (session) didn't have a set date. It is good that Congress has decided that the second voting (session) will be held in the fortnight of February, and they (lawmakers) will ratify these early elections," Mrs. Boluarte stated.

Last Monday, the Congress Board presented a draft legislative resolution to move up the date of the start of the next legislature to February 15.

The measure will allow the advancement of elections to April 2024 to be debated again at a plenary session starting February 15. The bill requires a second approving vote.

Visit to INO and EsSalud

The Head of State visited the National Institute of Ophthalmology (INO) and the National Center for Telemedicine of the Social Health Insurance System (EsSalud) so as to verify the implementation of longer service hours to reduce the number of postponed or waiting consultations.

"The purpose of the visit was to be able to verify more (medical) attentions in more extensive hours of the morning, afternoon, and even the evening, in order to reduce the number of unattended appointments at the national level," Mrs. Boluarte said.

Calls for reflection

Moreover, the top official called on protesters to reflect so that they put down the extreme measures such as road blockades or the impediment to the entry of trucks carrying basic resources.

"It is necessary to make these gentlemen reflect that, with just reasons, the vast majority of them go out and are protesting peacefully. However, blocking roads, not allowing the entry of trucks that carry gas or fuel, means leaving the peaceful protest behind," she indicated.

President Boluarte also affirmed that there have been blackmail acts so that some citizens forcefully attend the protests.
