Peru: President calls for calm, asks transporters on strike to clear roads

11:34 | Lima, Mar. 18.

The President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti on Thursday asked transporters on strike to calm down and clear the roads in order to secure the free movement of food, medicine, and other essential goods.

In statements to TV Peru, he affirmed that an open and frank dialogue has been held with transporters, a clear proposal has been put on the table, and "the issue should be resolved today in one way or another."

"We should receive a response from transporters this morning; the Government will issue a statement immediately, but we will take measures in such a way that they can prevent public peace from being further affected," the statesman expressed.

"It is time to call for calm and tranquility, to give the country what it needs to move forward in the fight against the pandemic and hold clean transparent elections," he added.

According to the Head of State, measures to ensure that food and medicine, as well as other essential goods, can be moved across the country without restriction will be taken starting today.

"I call on the transport workers' union to keep calm and clear roads because —in one way or another— we must reach a final agreement today, to lead to a situation in which free movement across the country is not restricted anymore," he explained.
