The Presidency of the Republic on Saturday commemorated Peru's victory over the Spanish fleet following a five-hour confrontation in Callao during the Battle of May 2.

"Honor and glory to our heroes of the Battle of May 2! Today we commemorate the 1866 victory, when the unity and patriotism of civilians and military personnel consolidated the independence of our homeland and across the Americas," it stated on X.

In that regard, the Presidential Office reaffirmed its commitment to continue defending "with the same determination the sovereignty, peace, and future of all Peruvians."

On this historic date, Peru recalls the events of the feat in which the people of Callao took part with courage to repel the attempt by the Spanish fleet to reconquer former colonies in South America, including Peru, which had been its largest viceroyalty.

The commemoration also pays tribute to the courage and sacrifice of Army Colonel Jose Galvez, who died heroically at the La Merced Tower of the Real Felipe Fortress during the battle.
