Peru PM: Social activities to be restricted indefinitely to counter COVID-19

11:49 | Lima, Apr. 13.

All social activities will be postponed indefinitely in a bid to prevent the increase of coronavirus infections throughout Peru, Prime Minister Vicente Zeballos affirmed.

"All activities of a social nature will be postponed indefinitely," he said Sunday in statements to local media.

The President of the Council of Ministers noted that among the activities to be restricted are those of a sporting, artistic or cultural nature, including movie showings, among others.

In this respect, Zeballos agreed to establish criteria to regularize the attendance of Peruvians to the markets, in order to prevent further contagion.

According to the government official, this measure would imply a cultural change, since people in Peru visit supply centers very regularly. In fact, this is a deep-rooted tradition.

On the other hand, he believes that the flow of people across borders is unlikely to return to normal, as well as air traffic which —in his opinion— will hit the tourism sector, as it is happening around the world.
