The ex-President of the Republic Pedro Castillo, who was impeached and removed from office earlier today, remains detained at the Lima Prefecture headquarters located in the capital city.

Attorney General Patricia Benavides and Prosecutor Marita Barreto, who is the Coordinator of the Special Team of Prosecutors against Corruption of Power, arrived at the scene.

The ex-Head of State was arrested when he was being transported inside a vehicle on Wilson Avenue, in Downtown Lima, after leaving the Government Palace building.

Television footage showed Castillo accompanied by former Prime Minister Anibal Torres.

In addition, the plenary session scheduled for this afternoon was convened for the Vice-President of the Republic, Dina Boluarte, to assume the post of President of the Republic.

On Wednesday morning, Castillo announced the temporary dissolution of Congress and the call for new parliamentary elections, which —according to him— should take place in nine months.

The Public Ministry led the arrest of Pedro Castillo for the alleged crime of rebellion —regulated in Article 346 of the Penal Code— for having violated the constitutional order.
