More than 400 Dutch travelers —who got stranded in Peru due to the
state of emergency and
border closure over the COVID-19 pandemic— will return to their country on a special flight today, the Municipality of Miraflores reported Wednesday.
Tourists started gathering at 5 a.m. in Salazar Park, located in Lima's Miraflores district, to complete an identity check before boarding the 10 buses to
Air Group No. 8 of the Peruvian Air Force (FAP) in Callao.
According to Miraflores Security Manager Abdul Miranda, the foreigners will go through a triage process before boarding the plane to monitor their health condition and screen for possible coronavirus (COVID-19) symptoms.
"Most of them came to Peru for tourism purposes. Some are Peruvian citizens holding dual citizenship and return where their family is, their home in the Netherlands," Miranda explained.
The National Police (PNP) and Miraflores municipal patrol guards escorted the caravan in its journey to the air base in Callao.
In this respect, Commander Jorge Contreras reported that 35 troops from different police units were deployed to ensure security during the check-in, boarding process, and procession of buses.
