Peru: Over 16,000 police officers deployed to guard Summit of the Americas

09:00 | Lima, Apr. 10.

More than 16,000 police officers will be deployed to provide security during the 8th Summit of the Americas due to be held April 13 and 14 in Lima, Peru.

The announcement was made by Interior Minister Mauro Medina Guimaraes.

According to Medina, about 8,000 officers will ensure the security of authorities. They belong to different units including the anti-drug agency (Dirandro) and the anti-terrorism squad (Dircote).

As stated by Chief of the Lima Regional Police, General PNP Gaston Rodriguez, the police agents are tasked to guard the participating leaders and the 46 hotels they will stay at.

Likewise, surveillance will be conducted along their routes and at event venues like Lima Convention Center, Culture Ministry, Lima's Main Square, and embassies of participating countries.

Streets will be closed, but for a short period of time to avoid disturbing Lima citizens' activities. Roadblocks and detours will be announced on Wednesday.

As is known, 20 leaders have so far confirmed their attendance at the Summit.

At this event, leaders will adopt specific commitments on the theme "Democratic Governance against Corruption."

The 8th Summit of the Americas will take place in the Peruvian capital city on April 13-14, 2018.

Thus, April 13 and 14 have been declared non-working days in Peru's capital Lima and the neighboring port city of Callao, and the work hours during said days are considered compensable.
