Peru's non-traditional exports reached a historic milestone in 2019, reaching US$13.791 billion, which accounts for 30% of total shipments, and registering a growth of 4.1% compared to 2018, Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Edgar Vasquez reported Thursday.
"Despite the difficult international scenario, shipments of higher value added products continued to grow, thanks to joint efforts between the business sector and the State to promote internationalization of Peruvian firms and the entry of our exportable supply into new markets," he emphasized.
The minister noted that 7,678 companies have exported 4,643 non-traditional products to 177 markets, being the United States the main export destination, accounting for 28% of the total (US$3.919 billion).
Other top destinations for Peruvian non-traditional exports included the Netherlands (US$1.165 billion), Chile (US$795 million), Ecuador (US$714 million), and Spain (US$681 million).
Total exports
Exports of traditional and non-traditional products amounted to US$45.978 billion in 2019, down by 4.2% from 2018, amid a scenario affected by trade tensions between the world’s two biggest economies.
China remained the main destination for Peruvian exports, with sales totaling over US$13.5 billion (29%), followed by the United States (12%), Canada (5%), Switzerland, and South Korea.
Moreover, 8,201 companies exported 4,742 products to 179 markers in 2019.
