Peruvian non-traditional exports amounted to US$1.242 billion last May, representing a 75% expansion over the same month in 2020, the Lima Chamber of Commerce (CCL) reported on Tuesday.

According to CCL's Foreign Trade Research and Development Institute (Idexcam), this year-on-year advance in the fifth month is based on higher export values in all subsectors —especially the agricultural, chemical, and textile-apparel ones.

"The Peruvian non-traditional sector represents 31% of total exports," it stressed.

Products with the highest demand

Likewise, Idexcam pointed out that non-traditional agricultural shipments last May recorded a positive variation of 30% compared to May 2020 —after registering amounts valued at US$540.2 million.

These products account for 13.49% of the total exported goods.

Fruits and vegetables were the main export products of the subsector, reporting values of US$304.2 million (+30.44%) and US$88 million (+21.75%), respectively.

Meanwhile, the chemical sector —with a 4.41% market share— exported goods worth US$176.7 million, representing a rise of 74.49% compared to the US$101.3 million registered in May 2020.

For its part, the textile-apparel sector experienced an expansion of 365.52% by reaching US$137.5 million —a figure higher than the US$29.1 million registered in May 2020.

"This subsector has a participation of 3.39% in the total exported, being clothing (398.03%) and yarns (583.24%) the products with the highest growths," it concluded.
