Peru: New oxygen production plant sent to Tarapato

13:12 | Tarapoto (San Martin region), Jun. 25.

A new medical oxygen production plant was sent to Tarapato on Thursday morning to supply this important resource to patients at Hospital No. II of that city.

Jorge Perlacios, spokesperson of the Social Health Insurance System (EsSalud), reported that the plant has a capacity of 24 cubic meters per hour, which will help supply oxygen to 57 beds at the Tarapoto health facility.

Additionally, he affirmed that this tool is vital to combat the coronavirus (COVID-19) in the area.

"Tarapoto is one of the hardest-hit cities by this disease, just as Iquitos was at the time. This explains our response," Perlacios expressed.

"To date, EsSalud has managed the supply —on alternate days— of 100 oxygen cylinders and, with this new plant, we are sure that our actions will yield better results," he added.

According to the spokesperson, EsSalud also sent nearly 4 tons of medical equipment to the area, such as hospital beds and PPE, including surgical and KN95 masks, aprons, overalls, disposable boots, as well as latex and nitrile gloves. 80 oxygen cylinders and medications were sent as well.

"So far, more than 10 tons of personal protective equipment (PPE), medicines, and medical supplies have been sent to said rainforest region," Perlacios reported.

Hospital No. II of Tarapoto has increased its capacity to 125 hospital beds and 7 intensive care unit (ICU) beds.

It must be noted that, before the pandemic, the average consumption of oxygen was 20 to 30 cylinders per day, and now the consumption is around 140 cylinders daily.
