Peru: New COVID-19 cases down 50% in Loreto region

00:00 | Iquitos (Loreto region), Sep. 8.

Recent figures indicate that the worst of the coronavirus pandemic has passed for the rainforest region of Loreto, located in northeastern Peru.

The Loreto Healthcare Network of the Social Health Insurance System (EsSalud) reported a 50% decrease in new COVID-19 cases within said region, with less than 400 cases a week, down from the total reported the previous week.

According to Loreto Healthcare Network Manager Percy Rojas, comparing last week with the previous week, the number of cases dropped by half.

As is known, the number of new cases per week has peaked to 1,300 since early June. Therefore, various measures were taken, such as visits of medical teams, the delivery of medications, among other actions that have resulted in the reduction of new cases.

Rojas reported that, since the beginning of the health emergency, EsSalud has sent over 60 medical teams to the region, which saved the lives of thousands of patients at the EsSalud Village set up in Iquitos since May.

In addition, EsSalud delivered more than 55 tons of supplies from Lima, including medicines, medical devices and personal protective equipment (PPE) to cope with the pandemic.

Likewise, more than 20,000 rapid tests for the diagnosis and timely care of COVID-19 patients were sent to Loreto, as well as tons of drugs for the treatment of confirmed cases.
