The President of the Republic, Jose Jeri, said on Thursday that the interinstitutional framework cooperation agreement signed between the Ministry of Health (Minsa) and the Social Health Insurance system (EsSalud) marks both a starting and turning point toward improving healthcare for all citizens.

During the ceremony marking the signing of the agreement at the Government Palace, the Head of State noted that Peru continues to face shortcomings in healthcare delivery, a situation that has persisted for many years.

"The memorandum of understanding between the Ministry of Health and the Social Health Insurance System is not just any document; it represents a fundamental starting point, because what we are going to do will be based on our capacities, our organization, and the experience each sector brings," Jeri stated.

"We are beginning a process of collaboration and mutual understanding, and we must put the best of each institution at the service of the population," he added.

The President said the collaboration will be carried out with full respect for each institution's way and style of working, but stressed that the aim is to send a clear message to the citizenry that "things can change and will be better going forward."

"This memorandum of understanding is the starting point; it is the turning point for improving the way we care for our citizens, so that we no longer see women crying to request an appointment, or have to see our medical staff complaining because a part needs to be replaced on a CT scanner so that it can operate again," he explained.

In that regard, the top official noted that addressing these shortcomings will allow the population to regain trust in its authorities.

"The presence of international organizations is also important, and so is the commitment of the private sector to coordinate with them; this is the moment to take citizens to a new level of care," he stated.

The President added that there is a willingness to improve conditions in the healthcare sector and said he is fully convinced that service capacity for the population will be renewed.
