Peru Min: Economic activities, environment are not opposites

14:39 | Arequipa (Arequipa region), Sep. 17.

Peruvian Environment Minister Lucia Ruiz has affirmed that any economic activity can be carried out in Peru, provided that it is developed in a well-balanced, harmonious, and socially-sustainable way.

"Economic activities are not the opposite of the environment. The activities can be developed in the same sustainable territory and for the benefit of all," the high-ranking official expressed.

"As a country we must build trust together, among the State, businesses, and civil society," she underlined.

Likewise, the minister considered it is important for the population to be aware of the characteristics of the mining activity and its coexistence with other productive activities while respecting social and environmental standards

Furthermore, Ruiz indicated the Peruvian Government is committed to seeking dialogue in response to the people's demands.

Remarks were made during the 34th edition of Perumin, the world's second largest mining convention taking place in Peru's southern city of Arequipa on September 16-20.

Within this framework, the cabinet member underlined these types of spaces promote responsible mining in harmony with its environment and the population.

On the occasion, she was joined by Prime Minister Salvador del Solar, as well as Ministers Paola Bustamante (Development-Social Inclusion), and Francisco Ismodes (Energy-Mines), among others.
