Peru may ratify CPTPP in 1Q 2019

14:02 | Tokyo (Japan), Jan. 18.

Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Edgar Vasquez on Friday affirmed his portfolio expects Peru to ratify the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP, also known as TPP-11) in the first quarter of 2019.

According to the official, the agreement —in the Inca country— will come into force 60 days after the internal ratification process has concluded.

Likewise, the Foreign Trade and Tourism Ministry (Mincetur) has sent the favorable opinions of all the sectors involved in the Foreign Affairs' Treaties Department in order to begin internal procedures for international accords.

"The Foreign Affairs Ministry must carry out the complete assessment of all the technical reports, and that takes time," he expressed.

In March 2018, the agreement was signed by high-ranking officials from Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, New Zealand, Singapore, and Viet Nam.

The only countries, which have not ratified it yet are Peru, Chile, Malaysia, and Brunei. "We are in the corresponding processes," Minister Vasquez added.

Remarks were made from Tokyo, where the first ministerial meeting of the CPTPP Commission will take place on January 19.
