Peru: Lima Group condemns detention of Venezuela National Assembly President

10:37 | Lima, Jan. 14.

Lima Group members —without Mexico— issued a joint statement condemning the arbitrary detention of Venezuela's National Assembly President and lawmaker Juan Guaido.

On Sunday, members of the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (SEBIN) detained Guaido for one hour, an event described as serious by the Lima Group.

Likewise, they expressed their total rejection of any action that may affect the physical integrity of National Assembly members, as well as their families and allies.

The Lima group also denounces any kind of pressure or coercion that may hinder the National Assembly's full and normal exercise of powers as the constitutional and legitimately-elected organization in Venezuela.

Last Friday, the lawmaker indicated he was willing to fill the power vacuum that —in his opinion— exists in the Bolivarian nation, since Nicolas Maduro's government is not recognized as legitimate by the majority of the country nor by a large part of the international community.

However, Foreign Affairs Minister Nestor Popolizio recognized that cutting diplomatic relations with a neighboring nation is always an option when faced to an illegitimate regime.
