12:45 | Lima, Jun. 18.

Starting June 21, Metropolitan Lima and Callao will move down to high risk level for COVID-19, given the improvement in the pandemic control indicators, which means the night curfew will start at 11 p.m. (local time).

As is known, this announcement was made by Education Minister Ricardo Cuenca, while clarifying the new classification of territories at a press conference he gave along with Peruvian Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez and Health Minister Oscar Ugarte last Wednesday.

According to Cuenca, Metropolitan Lima and Callao are now in the "very high" risk level for COVID-19 restrictions. However, as of June 21, they will move down to high risk level, which implies fewer restrictions for the population.

"Starting June 21, Lima and Callao will be in the high risk level and subject to the corresponding measures. The only two changes are that business and professional events-related activities in closed spaces will be allowed, and there will be a few adjustments in the curfews," he explained.

Along with Lima and Callao, various provinces in Cajamarca, Huancavelica, Huanuco, Ica, La Libertad, Lambayeque, Madre de Dios, Piura, Puno, San Martin, and Tumbes will be under the high risk classification for COVID-19 restrictions starting June 21.

In all of them, the night curfew will start at 11 p.m. and will end at 4 a.m. the next day.

Levels

Thus, there is a new classification of territories.

12 provinces will be at moderate risk level.
99 provinces will be at high risk level.
76 provinces will be at very high risk level.
9 provinces will be at extreme risk level.

The nine provinces at extreme risk will be: Chachapoyas (Amazonas); Lucanas (Ayacucho); Arequipa, Camana, Castilla, Caylloma, Caraveli and Islay (Arequipa); and Espinar (Cusco).

Sunday ban on private vehicles

As part of this new classification, the ban on the use of private vehicles will remain in force all day on Sundays, whereas public transportation systems will operate without restrictions.

As stated by the minister, this new classification will apply from Monday, June 21, to Sunday, July 11.
