Starting May 10, Metropolitan Lima and Callao will move back to very high risk level for COVID-19, which means restrictions such as the mandatory social immobility (curfew) imposed on Sundays will be lifted.

This was confirmed by Education Minister Ricardo Cuenca at a press conference he gave along with Peruvian Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez and Health Minister Oscar Ugarte.

According to Cuenca, the classification as very high risk level in Lima and Callao will apply from May 10 to 30.

However, both cities will remain in extreme level through May 9, which prevents citizens from leaving their homes on Sunday, among other restrictions.

On Mother's Day, as previously mentioned by the Government's spokespersons, a curfew will be in place across the country, and citizens will be allowed to go out only to get food and medicine, on foot or by bicycle, since the use of private vehicles will be restricted, too.

"Mandatory social immobility will be in force throughout the country on Sunday, May 9, for Mother's Day, regardless of the risk level in each province," the minister explained.

"The aim is to prevent family gatherings and protect the life of our mothers. We must find all the ways to be close to them without physical presence," he added.

According to Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez, the move to very high risk level in Lima and Callao is due to a slight decline in COVID-19 cases and deaths in recent days.
