Peru leads non-traditional exports growth in region

11:00 | Lima, Nov. 16.

The Central Reserve Bank (BCR) on Tuesday reported that Peru resumed the leadership in terms of non-traditional exports growth among the region's main economies since March 2021, and it remained this way as of September.

Thus, Peru's non-traditional product sales abroad recorded an inter-annual expansion rate of 26.8% in the accumulated rate of the last twelve months thru September 2021, surpassing the growth rates registered in Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, and Chile.

It is worth mentioning that in the last five years —as of September 2021— Peru led the growth in non-traditional exports in the countries of this region, with an average annual rate of 8.3%.

This result is explained by higher shipments of agricultural products (mainly fruits), as well as those from the textile, chemical, fisheries, and iron-steel sectors.

In monthly terms, Peruvian non-traditional exports amounted to US$1.598 billion in September, reaching an all-time high. Compared to September 2019, the value increased 37.5%, mainly due to the higher volumes shipped (35%).

Compared to September 2020, non-traditional exports were higher by 23.7%. In terms of volume and price, these were higher by 14.4% and 8.2%, respectively.

From January to September 2021, these exports reached US$11.582 billion, growing 16% over the same period of 2019 (33.9% compared to the period from January to September 2020).

In the accumulated January-September period, the products sold the most abroad were fresh avocados, with an expansion of 40.5% over the same period of 2019 (45.4% compared to similar period in 2020).

Exports of Blueberries expanded 77.4% versus the same period of 2019 (39% compared to January-September of the previous year) and those of fresh grapes registered an expansion of 42.9% over 2019, as well as 22.9% compared to the same period of 2020.
