Peru: Largest handmade cloth breaks Guinness World Record in Cusco

10:59 | Espinar (Cusco region), Nov. 16.

The world's largest handmade cloth —featuring cultural imagery of Cusco— was made at Pallpata district's main square in Espinar province, setting a new Guinness World Record.

The gigantic fabric measures 288.55 m², and 250 kg of sheep fiber was used to knit it.

According to Gloria Choquepata, artisan and promoter of the initiative, the work was intended to mark the 101st anniversary of Espinar province.

Guinness World Records adjudicator Natalia Ramirez verified the basic requirements the record must fulfill to qualify.

The attempt beat the previous record set by a 276.41 m² tapestry in Beijing, China.

The Peruvian cloth displays images of dancers, a colonial-style church in Yauri, the city's main square, and symbols of the pre-Inca K'ana Culture.

A total of 12 local craftswomen took part in the knitting process.
