Peru: Arequipa traditional dance breaks Guinness World Record

14:18 | Arequipa (Arequipa region), Sep. 17.

Arequipa's traditional dance —La Benita— has entered the Guinness World Records (GWR) database as the globe's Largest Peruvian Folk Dance.

The event consisted of 2,352 couples who danced at the southern city's main square last Sunday.

The international organization adjudicator Natalia Ramirez —along with 70 official judges —verified the number of couples, as well as their traditional garments required for the dance.

As result, 191 couples were rejected since they did not comply with the requirements established by GWR.

The adjudicators also oversaw the dance choreography.

Said event was organized by the White City's Provincial Municipality and the 478th Anniversary Celebrations Committee.

The corresponding goal was to beat its previous record of over 1,200 couples registered in 2014.

Celebration Committee member Carlos Sanchez expressed his satisfaction with the title, which was achieved thanks to the support of the whole population.

Both private and public delegations, as well as the general public, had signed up to participate in the event and even attended the daily rehearsals carried out at the main square during the nights.

This activity marked the end of Arequipa's anniversary celebrations, which had started last July.
