Peru: Judiciary orders 36-month pretrial detention for ex-judge Hinostroza

12:11 | Lima, Oct. 22.

The Peruvian Preparatory Investigation Court ordered a 36-month pretrial detention for dismissed Judge Cesar Hinostroza —currently in Spain— who has been accused of allegedly being involved in organized crime, committing the crimes of illegal sponsorship, influence peddling, and incompatible negotiation.

The request was submitted by the Public Ministry that formalized the preparatory investigation against the former magistrate.

According to Judge Hugo Nuñez, the accused left the country to evade justice once Congress had approved the constitutional complaint against him.

As is known, he was arrested in the European country and will remain in a Spanish prison until his extradition to Peru is determined.

"As such, the request for pretrial detention has been declared well founded, thus a 36-month pretrial detention against the accused Cesar Hinostroza Pariachi has been ordered," the resolution reads.

This period is justified since the investigation against him is related to organized crime.

About the case

Hinostroza is implicated in a series of audio recordings released by Panorama TV show and investigative journalism site IDL-Reporteros.

In the conversations, the former judge offers and accepts favors to and from National Council of the Magistracy (CNM) members and other officials. These actions were harshly criticized by most Peruvians.

On October 4, Peruvian Congress approved that Hinostroza be dismissed and banned from holding public office for 10 years.
