The Interior Ministry, through the National Police of Peru (PNP), presented the "2022 Safe Schoolchildren" operation plan, which is intended to ensure the safety of public and private school environments during the start of the school year throughout the national territory, the government agency reported on Sunday.

The ceremony featured Deputy Public Safety Minister Pedro Vilca and PNP Commander General Vicente Tiburcio.

As stated during the event, 10,000 police officers will be heavily deployed through preventive foot and motorized patrols.

Additionally, the authorities explained that said deployment will involve troops from various police stations with the support of specialized units such as Terna, Halcones, Escuadron Verde, Cobra, and Criminal Investigation Departments (Depincri).

Vilca pointed out that the Interior sector is committed to "ensuring a successful return and duration of the school year in terms of safety."

Similarly, he noted that intense intelligence work will be done to identify frequent crimes affecting schoolchildren such as robberies, gangs, illicit drug trafficking, and even human trafficking.

Tiburcio reaffirmed that police patrol, surveillance, and protection will be intensified at school entry and exit times starting Monday, March 14, when classes will officially start across Peru.

The ministry highlights that the plan includes prevention actions such as talks by police officers aimed at parents and teachers, with the support of the educational centers, especially those located in districts with the highest crime rate.

Finally, the government department stated that in case schoolchildren suffer any kind of robbery, assault, or domestic abuse, they should approach the nearest police station —joined by an adult— to report the event and make a formal complaint.
