announced on Wednesday afternoon the establishment of a unified command to confront and defeat crime.
The unified command will comprise the Armed Forces and the National Police, the Head of State said.
Remarks were made during the presentation of the Combined Forces for the Fight Against Organized Crime at the Caceres Square located inside the Army Headquarters in Lima's San Borja district.
"I announce the establishment of a unified command to confront and defeat crime. Here, at the Army Headquarters, we will establish a large control and operations center to direct all actions," she stated.
The top official said the Executive Branch, the Peruvian Army, the Navy, the Air Force, and the National Police had made fundamental decisions to protect the population.
"The Peruvian people are desperate because they go out to work every day afraid of being extorted or killed in a shooting," Fujimori emphasized.
"The Peruvian people are disappointed that their authorities have done little to defeat crime over the past 26 years," she added.
As President of Peru and Supreme Chief of the Armed Forces, the Head of State said she cannot stand idly by while criminals continue killing citizens.
"That is why today we met at COSEDENA, the National Security and Defense Council; together we decided on a major change in the fight against crime," Fujimori stated.
"We are no longer going to wait. We are the ones who will confront crime with the full legitimate force of the State, as mandated by the Constitution," she added.
The Head of State said a special elite group made up of members of the Police and the Armed Forces is being formed to conduct special operations.
"We will appear where they least expect us to carry out search operations and make immediate arrests. We will expel, in record time, foreigners who came to break the law and attack Peruvians," she indicated.
Control of the prisons will be resumed, and inmates who continue committing crimes from inside prisons will be cut off from communication.
"We are creating the Executive Branch's Special Commission Against Crime to coordinate with the ministries, all public institutions, and private institutions when necessary," Fujimori noted.
The Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF), the National Intelligence Directorate (DINI), the Supervisory Agency for Private Investment in Telecommunications (Osiptel), and telecommunications companies will also join this effort, she pointed out.
The top official added that accurate, objective, real-time information on the progress and results of this initiative will be provided.
In this context, the President called on all political forces to join the fight against crime; the Justice System to act swiftly and firmly; and the private sector to join the effort to restore the principle of authority and the rule of law.
"I invite foreign governments to share their experience, technology, information, and resources in the fight against crime. The defense of citizens' lives has no flag," she said.
Finally, the top official reiterated her support for the National Police and the Armed Forces in the strict fulfillment of their mission in accordance with the law, as well as her "firm demand" for professionalism, legality, discipline, discretion, and respect for democracy and human rights.
