Amidst red-white flags, parade arrangements and overall fanfare surrounding Peru's coming Independence celebrations, Pasco offers a still, outdoorsy getaway alternative to enjoy the long holidays.

Central highland Pasco will host a Geotourism Festival on July 28-29 to promote sustainable tourism, as well as the Inca country's geological heritage, geo- and biodiversity.

The High-Andean region is home to the Sanctuary of Huayllay, a stunning rock forest recognized as one of Peru's breathtaking natural wonders.

At over 4,000 m.a.s.l., Huayllay Stone Forest stretches over some 6,815 hectares that harbor not only interestingly-shaped rock formations, but also diverse natural wealth and cultural heritage.

The site now pursues the title of central Peru's Touristic Geopark.

“Geopark designation would make it an iconic geotourism destination in central Peru and in South America,” Huayllay Mayor Hector Morales told Andina news agency.

This way, local and foreign tourists would be able to "cover the five geo-routes while taking in whimsically-shaped mammoth outcrops, cave paintings, thermal baths, glacial morphology and other attractions."

The Geotourism Festival will feature a rock-climbing competition, a magnetic-center energy-recovery ritual, boat rides in Japurin Lake, Andean cuisine tastings, among other activities.

"Nature lovers seeking to enjoy this long holidays should take trainers, bottled water, hydrating fruits, warm clothes and sunscreen," the government official recommended.

"And, to face the altitude, have a glass of mate de coca [coca tea]."
