As part of Peru’s ongoing accession process to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) presented the country’s latest advancements in trade policy before the OECD Trade Committee.

During the session, José Luis Castillo, Director General for International Trade Negotiations at Mincetur, outlined Peru’s current economic outlook, the strengthening of its network of trade agreements, key public policies on foreign trade, and long-term goals for the sector.

The OECD Secretariat also shared the Market Openness Review for Peru, an evaluation examining national policies and regulations linked to trade and investment. The assessment was completed by Mincetur in 2023, with the participation of various public and private institutions as well as accredited diplomatic missions in the country.

As part of the evaluation process, the OECD Trade Committee is expected to issue conclusions and recommendations in the coming months. These inputs will help guide Peru in adopting new public policy measures aligned with the standards and best practices of OECD member economies.

Peru’s Accession Path

After more than a decade of efforts to deepen cooperation with the OECD and adopt the organization’s standards, the OECD Council agreed by consensus in January 2022 to invite Peru to begin the formal accession process.

Later that year, in June 2022, the OECD adopted Peru’s Accession Roadmap. The country submitted its Initial Memorandum in June 2023 during the OECD Ministerial Council Meeting.
