Peru has Ethics Committee for evaluation and ethical review of COVID-19 clinical trials

00:00 | Lima, Aug. 24.

Peru has received registration that incorporates the Temporary National Research Ethics Committee (CNTE) —for the evaluation and ethical review of COVID-19-related clinical trials— into the registry of the International Research Ethics Committees of the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Health Institute (INS) has reported.

The registration certifies that the above-mentioned Committee abides by international guidelines and has a manual of procedures for reviews and reports of adverse events or unexpected problems in clinical trials.

Thus, the CNTEI joins other 29 Peruvian Ethics Committees registered in the platform.

According to the INS —the institution hosting the CNTEI— this registration represents the institutional commitment to ethics in research and the protection of the rights, integrity and safety of all people participating in COVID-19-related clinical trials, including those for COVID-19 vaccine candidates.

This has been made possible thanks to the experience and commitment of its members, as well as the professional support received from the INS. This has allowed Peru to be at the forefront of clinical research on COVID-19 in the region.

Likewise, from its establishment to date, the CNTEI has reviewed 24 clinical trials with strict respect for its operating procedures and in time frames consistent with the health emergency.

The National Committee —called CNTEI— was established by Supreme Decree No. 014-2020-SA in April 2020 at the initiative of the Ministry of Health (Minsa) and the National Health Institute (INS).
