The Government of Peru has delivered four tons of personal protective equipment (PPE), medical supplies, medicines, and full oxygen cylinders to
Loreto in order to improve the care of COVID-19 patients in this rainforest region.
Carried on flights operated by the
Peruvian Air Force, the aid was brought to Yurimaguas and Iquitos to strengthen the fight against the novel coronavirus.
Production Minister Rocio Barrios supervised the shipments and, together with a Health Ministry team and Congressman Leonardo Inga, headed to Yurimaguas to coordinate —with local authorities— the implementation of actions to mitigate the pandemic in Alto Amazonas and Datem del Marañon provinces.
Barrios met with Alto Amazonas Mayor Hugo Araujo, Santa Gema Hospital Director Miguel Perez, and Alto Amazonas Sub-Prefect Juan Angulo at Moises Benzaquen Rengifo Airport in Yurimaguas.
Joined by her delegation, the minister brought two tons of PPE such as face masks, aprons, glasses, overalls, among others, as well as medicines, and oxygen cylinders.
In addition, she arranged the transport of technicians who will work on the installation of an oxygen plant at Santa Gema Hospital, so as to increase the supply of
this vital element.
Invisible and deadly enemy
Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that cause illnesses ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) or the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). These viruses can be transmitted between animals and people.
The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is a new strain that had not been previously identified in humans. It is transmitted from human to human through respiratory droplets from coughing and sneezing. COVID-19 is also transmitted by close contact with people infected by the virus.
