Peru Government postpones in-person classes, announces purchase of tablets for students

14:15 | Lima, Apr. 18.

The Peruvian Government has approved the purchase of more than 840,000 tablets including internet access for the same number of school students in rural and urban areas, President Martin Vizcarra affirmed on Saturday as he announced the decision to postpone in-person classes.

On the occasion, the Head of State pointed out that —on the recommendation of the Ministry of Health (Minsa)— the Government has decided to extend the postponement of in-person classes —with a date yet to be set.

"There is no date yet. First, it was proposed that these (classes) should start in the first week of May, but no, that would be very soon," he expressed.

Within this framework, the top official said that minors are citizens who deserve the utmost care of society and the Peruvian State.

"We cannot put these children and studious youth at risk of contagion at classrooms for a time that we cannot yet define, but it cannot be in the short term," he emphasized.

Internet

Through the Ministry of Education (Minedu), 719,000 tablets will be purchased with mobile internet service for rural students, as well as 123,780 tablets with the same characteristics for urban students in poverty situation. The investment will amount to around S/600 million (about US$176 million).

The President went on to say this measure will lead to expanding digital inclusion in Peru.

Likewise, the statesman highlighted the arrival at homes of remote classes through the internet, radio, and television.

However, the Government made clear that students will have the opportunity to access a wide range of information through the internet.

In this sense, the leader underlined that the purchase of tablets will allow students in rural areas to access the same content that pupils in cities have, thus reducing gaps and disadvantages. For remote areas, where there are no electric power services, each tablet will include a solar charger.

On this occasion, the President was joined by some members of the Council of Ministers. The event was held at the Government Palace in Lima.

Saturday marks the thirty-fourth day of mandatory social isolation.
