In a special ceremony held at noon at the Government Palace in Lima, the Presidency of the Republic of Peru honored Daysi and Jorge Cori Tello for winning their respective categories at this year's World Youth Chess Championship 2009 in Turkey.
The ceremony, held at the Palace's Golden Hall, was chaired by Peruvian Vice-President Luis Giampietri on behalf of President Alan Garcia who returns home today from a trip to Europe.
Peruvian Sports Institute (IPD) president Arturo Woodman, Peruvian Chess Federation president Wilfredo Lafosse, Banco del Comercio chairman Carlos Ugas, Cementos Lima general manager Fabiana Gonzales, Saco Oliveros School representatives and Jorge's and Daisy's relatives were present at the ceremony.
Daysi, 16, was crowned world champion in the U-16 category after beating Georgian Mariam Danelia; while Jorge, 14, won his title in the U-14 category after defeating Dutch Benjamin Bok.
Daysi has become the only female International Grandmaster in Peru and the youngest in South America. Jorge, on the other hand, replaced Russian Anish Giri as the youngest International Grandmaster, and became the youngest in the history of America to win such title.
The “International Grandmaster” title is held for life and is awarded by the World Chess Federation (Fide) to outstanding players across the globe.
