Peru: Government forms working group for COVID-19 vaccination

The Peruvian Government formed a working group to support the implementation of the vaccination process against coronavirus (COVID-19), which is led by Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez, President Francisco Sagasti announced on Wednesday.

The working group will be composed of several State ministers, representatives of public institutions, the private sector, civil society, as well as the Armed Forces and the National Police of Peru.

"This way, we will face the enormous logistical challenge that entails bringing the vaccine to every corner of the country during this year," he said in a televised address to the nation.

On the occasion, the

Head of State announced the purchase of a batch of 38 million doses from the Chinese laboratory Sinopharm. The first shipment (one million doses) will arrive this January.

Likewise,

the top official announced that a purchase agreement had been signed with AstraZeneca, which will deliver 14 million doses starting September.

The Head of State said that the Government —while negotiating the purchase of vaccines from Sinopharm and continuing negotiations with other suppliers— has prepared for the distribution and application of doses.

"We started the Bicentennial year (2021) by giving a clear and concrete response to the COVID-19 pandemic. I announced that my transition and emergency government would restore the confidence and hope of all Peruvians. These agreements (reached) with Sinopharm and AstraZeneca are a sign that we are keeping our word," he concluded.

As is known, Mr. Sagasti became President of the Republic on November 17, 2020, to lead a transitional government. His term in office is set to end on July 28, 2021.
