Peru: Giant squid, blueberries boost northern regions' exports

13:00 | Lima, Dec. 26.

Peruvian exports from the northern regions increased —in average— 16.5% by October 2018, underpinned by greater sales of giant squid (+75%), shrimps (+6%), and blueberries (+51%), the Foreign Trade and Tourism Ministry (Mincetur) has informed.

It should be noted shipments of said berry broke a record after its campaign began.

Mincetur pointed out exports from said regions currently register the highest figures, especially Lambayeque (+34%), Piura (+32%), and Ancash (+28%) regions.

According to the Ministry, Lambayeque's shipments will near US$500 million, adding non-traditional products represent approximately 80% of its sales.

"Some fruits reached record figures from national and regional exports, such as avocados, blueberries, and mangoes (…)," Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Edgar Vasquez expressed.

Likewise, the official indicated Cusco, Arequipa, and Ayacucho regions posted significant dynamism throughout 2018. Therefore, they will register record export numbers by the end of the year, underpinned by greater sales of copper, zinc, blueberries, and avocados.
