The oral trial against former President Alejandro Toledo over Caso Interoceanica (Interoceanic Highway Case - Stretches 2 and 3), which involves the alleged delivery of bribes by Brazilian construction company Odebrecht, began on Monday.

The case is being led by the Second Collegiate Criminal Court of the National Superior Court.

Six (6) other people are also considered defendants.

For the former president, the Prosecutor's Office requested a sentence of 20 years and six (6) months in prison over the alleged crimes of collusion and money laundering.

The contract with Odebrecht to build the Interoceanic Highway —which connects Peru with Bolivia and Brazil— was signed in 2005, during Toledo's term in office (2001-2006).

In his confession to the Prosecutor's Office, the ex-director of Odebrecht in Peru, Jorge Barata, indicated that the Brazilian company had paid at least US$20 million in bribes to the former top official over the awarding of the South Interoceanic Highway's Stretches 2 and 3.

Other defendants

Entrepreneurs Fernando Camet and Jose Castillo are also prosecuted in this case. For each of them a custodial sentence of 20 years and six (6) months was requested.

Another co-defendant is Gonzalo Ferraro, for whom the Prosecutor's Office requested 11 years and six (6) months in prison.

Besides, nine (9) years of imprisonment have been requested for Sergio Bravo, Alberto Pasco-Font, and Avraham Dan On.

The aforementioned citizens are charged with the alleged commission of the crimes of collusion and money laundering over the irregular awarding of the aforementioned road infrastructure works in favor of Brazilian construction companies and their local affiliates.
