Peru, Germany make progress towards Amazon forest conservation deals

17:01 | Lima, Sep. 5.

Peru's Culture Minister Patricia Balbuena traveled to Germany to meet with Executive Branch representatives of the European country.

Peru and Germany work on a bilateral agenda for the conservation of Amazon forests throughout the Inca nation.

The initiative includes indigenous peoples as key players in the process.

Balbuena will meet with Germany's Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, Dr. Gerd Müller, first in Berlin and later in Frankfurt.

The protection of indigenous peoples in isolation and in initial contact, collaborative management and conservation of protected areas, the recovery of degraded areas, as well as contributions to climate change adaptation and mitigation, will be some of the topics covered.

The cooperation between Germany and Peru began in 2014 when they —along with Norway— signed the Joint Declaration of Intent within the framework of the UN Secretary General's Climate Summit in New York.

The Joint Declaration of Intent is a voluntary agreement of three countries seeking to join Peruvian efforts towards reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions —attributed to deforestation and forest degradation.
