Peru's Lava Jato Case Special Prosecution Group Coordinator Rafael Vela on Wednesday affirmed that the request for the extradition of former First Lady Eliane Karp was approved at first instance in the criminal proceedings linked to the Ecoteva case.

"The accusation has also been made in the Ecoteva case, in which even the extradition has been approved at first instance, not only of Mr. Alejandro Toledo, but also of Mrs. Eliane Karp and Mr. Avraham Dan On," he told RPP TV and radio station.

The prosecutor stressed that the request for extradition of the former First Lady is something new because it was not included in the case and was not subject to extradition by the Peruvian State.

Vela said the Lava Jato Case Special Prosecution Group members currently intend to advance as much as possible in their investigations, but warned that many times the legal defense teams have shown behaviors "which border on the malicious procedural" ones.

"We are trying to make as much progress as possible, respecting the rights of those under investigation and of their legal defense teams, which often border on the malicious procedural behaviors because they often do not allow us to complete the investigations," he emphasized.

Vela is currently in the Brazilian city of Curitiba to take the statements of former Odebrecht executives, as part of the collaboration agreement signed with the construction company.
