The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on behalf of Peru, welcomed the accession of the United Kingdom to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), thus becoming the first economy to accede to the Treaty.

The government agency highlighted this important step taken by the European country, particularly this year, when 200 years of Peru-UK relations are commemorated.

"Peru welcomes the United Kingdom to the CPTPP, one of the most ambitious trade agreements in the world, thereby becoming the first economy to accede to the Treaty," the Ministry stated.

"This occurs in a year in which 200 years of Peru-UK relations are commemorated," it said in a post on Twitter.

The Foreign Affairs sector stated that the United Kingdom's accession to the CPTPP is of particular importance for Peru given that it will complement and deepen the bilateral trade agreement signed in 2019, through the improvement of access conditions for Peruvian goods and services exports.

Likewise, this will have a positive impact on bilateral trade and investment, as well as on the creation of new jobs and the integration of Peruvian MSMEs into global value chains.

The CPTPP is a trading bloc consisting of Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, Vietnam, and now the United Kingdom.

Its objectives include promoting economic integration, establishing predictable legal frameworks for trade, facilitating regional trade, promoting sustainable growth, among others.
