Foreign Affairs Minister Carlos Pareja highlighted shared principles between Peru and the United States, as well as cooperation and historic milestones that have strengthened this relationship over 200 years of diplomatic ties.

The Peruvian government official underscored these aspects in an opinion column published Sunday on the occasion of the bicentennial of bilateral relations, commemorated on May 2.

"Within the framework of 200 years of diplomatic relations between Peru and the United States, Foreign Affairs Minister Carlos Pareja published an opinion column in the newspaper El Comercio, where he highlights shared principles, cooperation, and historic milestones that have strengthened this strategic relationship," the Foreign Affairs Ministry posted on X.

Among other aspects, the diplomat stressed that both countries have laid the groundwork for greater space cooperation through Peru's accession to the Artemis Accords.

"Since then, our countries have been working on the development of a project to build and operate a spaceport in northern Peru," he pointed out.

The minister added that, as part of a shared commitment to security in the Americas, Peru was designated a Major Non-NATO Ally by the United States this year.

Similarly, it has received support to reinforce the Peruvian National Police in combating illicit drug trafficking.

The column also noted that, in recent years, Peru has begun a process of modernization and strengthening of its defense capabilities, "which has as a milestone the recent decision to acquire F-16 Block 70 aircraft to reinforce Air Force capabilities over the next decade."

Moreover, the minister highlighted the Free Trade Agreement with the United States, the main destination for Peru's value-added exports.

Lastly, he underscored strategic opportunities to deepen the partnership between both countries in the future, given Peru's strategic location and its critical mineral reserves.
